A59 Junction Reconstruction, Green Hammerton

Client

Excel / Avant

Value

£260,000

Date

Aug – Sept 2022

The Project

A new housing development required a more suitable road junction with the main A59 which involved the relocation of the existing junction by 500m, construction of a new link road section and tie in of the new junction to the existing

A59. Due to the importance of the main A59 Harrogate to York trunk road, the work was carried out under full night- time road closure.

Our scope of work included:

  • Surveys and setting out
  •  Traffic Management
  • Surfacing of the new housing development access road
  •  Surfacing of the new junction with Base, Binder, and Hot Rolled Asphalt with Pre-Coated Chippings
  • Planing out 270m of the existing A59 to create the tie-in to the new junction
  • Resurfacing of the existing A59 to tie-in to the new junction
  • Surfacing of 880m2 of footpath
  • White lining
  • Replacement of studs

The original and additional scope were completed on time during a very restricted working window

Challenges and Successes

Due to the importance of the A59 Harrogate to York trunk road and due to other project delays, we were allocated 2 nights to complete all the works. Additionally, during the works, we were requested to lay an additional 72t of AC6 asphalt for the footpaths. To meet this deadline, we deployed multiple gangs and 3 pavers simultaneously – our mini, midi and large pavers.

The site was located adjacent to housing, and we worked with the residents to minimise noise during the night. We planned our work to complete the noisiest operations before 11pm (mainly planing operations) and briefed our workforce to work as quietly as possible (e.g., no shouting, no loud radios, no horn beeping etc).
