The Project

Road closure and resurfacing of the main A594 trunk road between Maryport and Dovenby. This required traffic management to ensure continual access to local residents in Dovenby, Dearham and surrounding villages plus access to the headquarters of M-Sport – a local employer of 300 people requiring continual access for deliveries and exports. The scope of work included:

  • Traffic management
  • Surveys and setting out
  • Cold milling
  • Kerbing
  • Realignment of ironwork
  • Highway surfacing
  • Footway reconstruction
  • Top soiling and seeding
  • Public liaison

Our work was carefully planned to minimise the construction schedule and maintain access to residents and businesses

Challenges and Successes

The A594 is a main route connecting the towns of Maryport and Cockermouth and is a key commuter and school transport route. The project was scheduled for daytime working only due to noise restrictions. To ensure the project was completed and the road reopened as quickly as possible, we increased production output by assigning additional plant and labour to shorten the schedule.

To ensure access was maintained to the M-Sport Headquarters, we planned our work in two phases – Phase 1 was resurfaced from the M-Sport access junction towards Cockermouth and Phase 2 was resurfaced from the M-Sport junction towards Maryport – maintaining an access route at all times.

Client Benefits

By maximising productivity and providing additional resources, the project was completed and handed back to our client 5 days earlier than planned – minimising disruption to the local area.
