The Project

The scheme involved the resurfacing of the busy A594 Dearham main street in Cumbria for our client Balfour Beatty.
The works was carried out primarily at night through the village main street to avoid traffic disruption and our scope
of work included:

  • Overall planing out of the carriageway to 40mm depth.
  • Planing out further 60mm of binder course for repair patching at various locations.
  • Planing out of footpaths to 30mm depth.
  • Replacement of binder repair patches.
  • Replacement of ironwork.
  • Repair of kerbing sections.
  • Surfacing of carriageway with HRA 35/14 asphalt and 65 PSV pre coated chips.
  • Surfacing of footpaths with AC 6mm asphalt.

The project was completed 1 day ahead of schedule by deploying additional resources to work in parallel to minimise disruption.

Challenges and Successes

The road runs through the village of Dearham which has roadside parking for the residents. To complete the works, we had to liaise with the residents to relocate their cars during the night so that we could access the road surface. Additionally, we had to always maintain access to the adjacent petrol station which was open 24 hours per day.

The road was closed at night from 7pm to 6am and required us to work in closed proximity to housing. To minimise disruption to residents we planned our work so that noisy and dusty activities (e.g., planing) were carried out as much as possible before 11 pm each night. We also increased our resource levels by deploying additional gangs to work in parallel at each end of the street to shorten the project duration.

We successfully completed the project 1 day ahead of schedule to the satisfaction of our client and the residents.
