The Project

Delivery of all groundwork and surfacing to construct a new car park in Carlisle city centre on a site prone to flooding. This required the use of an Aggregated Industries permeable asphalt in two areas of the site to create a SUDS system to allow the surface water to drain through the asphalt surface.

Scope of the works included:

  • All groundworks
  • Drainage
  • Services ducting
  • Kerbing
  • Surfacing

Our efficient pre-planning ensured that the new car park was delivered on time with no impact on the adjacent Grade 1 listed building

Challenges and Successes

Construction of the SUDS system required the use of clean, unbound aggregate. To ensure the plant and equipment did not ‘bog down’ in this unbound material, we used specialist tracked plant to travel over the area.

The construction site was located adjacent to a Grade 1 listed building which meant we had to plan the work to avoid going near it and take vibration into account during the works. We worked closely with our client and the local council to ensure we adhered to Grade 1 listed building regulations at all times.

The car park is located in a busy area of Carlisle city centre with restricted access for plant and material deliveries. To ensure we did not disrupt city centre businesses and residents, we produced a traffic management plan and avoided peak times for material and plant deliveries.

Client Benefits

Our ability to deliver all of the works for our client as a ‘one stop shop’ meant they had fewer interfaces and risks to manage. The new car park was delivered on time to alleviate parking problems for Carlisle residents.
