A43 Northbound Carriageway Embankment Reconstruction

The brief

As part of our ongoing relationship with Morgan Sindall, we have recently completed a significant project on the A43, involving reconstruction of the embankment alongside the northbound carriageway due to a landslip.

Our scope of work on this scheme included:

• Surveys and pre construction planning of the works prior to project start date.

• Set up of the construction compound and site welfare for our client, which was to be used for the following 3-6 months.

• Stripping and building of a new embankment due to a landslip.

• Piling mat installation using 6F5 material in 100mm layers to support the piling rig.

• Piling works carried out to stabilise the embankment before rebuilding with 6N stone in 200mm layers.

• V-ditch reformation over 160m, including removal of tree stumps and vegetation to improve drainage and protect the embankment.

Challenges & successes

All work was carried out at night to minimise disruption on this busy stretch of the A43. This brought its own challenges, as our team had to complete complex activities within limited working windows to ensure the road was fully reinstated and safe to reopen every morning.

Environmental protection was a key priority throughout the scheme. With significant earthworks taking place, we deployed an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECOW) to monitor operations and identify any signs of wildlife during excavation.

The programme was further constrained by road embargoes linked to major events at Silverstone and ongoing works on the HS2 project. These restrictions limited A43 closures and meant that flexibility and tight scheduling were critical to maintaining progress. Through early engagement and clear communication with stakeholders, we successfully navigated these constraints and delivered the project on time.
