Challenges & successes
The works were progressed in six phases through Cleator Main Street on day and night shifts, with road closures, traffic management and stop & go measures utilised at different stages of the works to minimise road user disruption.
Due to the works being carried out in a residential area within 1 metre of houses, pre-planning was required to ensure public safety. Letter drops to local residents, pre-start meetings with Cumberland Council and local councillors, and walk-in meetings for the public to ask questions directly to DSD Construction and Cumberland Council all made the residents and public feel involved with the scheme.
Due to the Christmas holidays, we could not close the road after the 6th December. Due to our excellent planning, we completed all road closure works 4 days earlier than programmed and then continued work under traffic light and stop & go control to allow the carriageway to be reopened to the public.
Outputs & Benefits
Positive feedback: We received a lot of positive feedback regarding this scheme from members of the public and our client.
Maintained access: The road was closed to the public, but access was maintained throughout the works to residents, school buses, and emergency services each shift through the use of a temporary running lane.
