"Completing ahead of programme under these conditions is a strong achievement for the team. The decision to accelerate, supported by our in-house capabilities and previous experience, allowed us to overcome the limitations of convoy working and deliver a high-quality result within a tight window."
Craig Whyte - Pre Construction Manager

The brief

Resurfacing 4.6km of the A66 between Great Broughton and Fitz Roundabout, Cockermouth – covering eastbound and westbound carriageways along the main trunk road providing access to West Cumbria.

Our scope of work on this scheme included:

  • Full carriageway resurfacing.

  • Planing out 115 to 200mm depth of existing carriageway.

  • Formation preparation, including sweeping and cleaning.

  • Application of bitumen emulsion.

  • Carriageway reinstatement comprising AC32 base course, AC20 binder course, and Clause 942 Thin Surface Course System (TSCS).

  • Maintaining existing alignment and the rolling crown through the underpass section.

Key quantities:

  • Asphalt Materials: 4,600 t
  • Carriageway Resurfaced: 4,562 m

Challenges & successes

Due to the importance of this strategic route and a deteriorating weather forecast, we mobilised additional asphalt batching plants at Tendley and Hulands quarries partway through the works. This increased output and site productivity, enabling the team to bring the completion date forward by 3 days whilst mitigating the weather risk.

Maintaining traffic flow required the works to be undertaken under traffic management convoy conditions. By leveraging previous experience on similar A66 projects such as the Long Newton to Elton scheme, using our reliable traffic management partners and a responsive approach to evolving site conditions, our team maintained progress and delivered a high-quality result ahead of schedule.

Outputs & Benefits

Health & Safety: There were zero reportable incidents or accidents throughout the works.

Accelerated Delivery: Works completed 3 days early, allowing other contractors access to site to complete their activities.
