The brief
As part of our ongoing work for NY Highways, we have recently completed seven important schemes titled ‘Area 6’ as Principal Contractor. These schemes involved the resurfacing and reconstruction of town centre roads in various locations within the Harrogate and Ripon areas.
Our scope of work included:
- Surveys and pre construction planning of the works prior to project start date.
- Set up of the construction compound and site welfare for all site operatives.
- Setting out site extents with our client, NY Highways.
- Traffic management using our subcontractor Premier Traffic Management Ltd.
- Civils works including removal and replacement of ironwork and kerb reinstatement.
- Planing and resurfacing of carriageways using various bituminous materials including Hot Rolled Asphalt.
- White lining using our subcontractor Premier Road Markings Ltd.
Key quantities:
- Tar-bound material planed & disposed: 3,270 t
- Pieces of Ironwork renewed: 400+
- HRA Surface Course: 1,000 t
Challenges & successes
All seven schemes had a tight working window of five hours per shift to avoid unnecessary disruption to road users and commuters from Harrogate and Ripon.
Some schemes were near school zones, local businesses and tourist attractions, which required us to work in phases to minimise disruption and work flexibly to ensure traffic flow and access was maintained.
Stakeholder engagement was required during the planning phase to ensure phasing of the schemes to avoid bottlenecks, and our Public Liaison Officer was deployed to consult residents, businesses and other stakeholders to understand their constraints and access requirements. This included ensuring routes were available for emergency services and public transport during the night and that the noisiest operations were carried out early during each shift to minimise sleep disruption to residents.
Outputs & Benefits
Health & Safety: There were zero reportable incidents or accidents throughout the works.
Managed access: The roads were closed to the public, but access was maintained for residents and emergency services.
