B1634 Refurbishment and Fit Out, SRP, Sellafield

All deadlines were met successfully whilst accommodating additional design requirements and scope.

The project scope

Acting as subcontractor, DSD Construction carried out the refurbishment and conversion of an existing office building into a site welfare facility in support of the Sellafield Repack Project at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria. Our scope of work included:

• Early Contractor Involvement to assist the design team and to optimise the construction process.
• Planning and preparation of safety documentation and work packs.
• Stakeholder engagement with building occupants, neighbouring facilities, utilities departments and transport system managers.
• Soft stripping of existing office facilities.
• Installation of new flooring.
• Installation of new windows, doors and fire doors.
• Joinery works.
• Replacement of soffits and facias.
• Installation of new showers, toilets and plumbing systems.
• Supply and installation of white goods.
• Supply, assembly and fitting new furniture.

Challenges & successes

Due to the nature of the project, the works were undertaken on a congested, and highly constrained nuclear construction site with high security clearance requirements. This required the mobilisation of the DSD Construction security cleared nuclear workforce and detailed planning of the construction methodology and material logistics, storage and laydown arrangements.

Due to the urgency of the project, it was imperative that deadlines were promptly met, meaning we had to anticipate and deliver additional design requirements and additional scope. Despite this, we successfully met all deadlines.

The work was carried out in a high security area which required us to work to strict security protocols and collaborate with the building owners and security department during the planning and delivery phases of the works. The project was also located in a frequently used pedestrian thoroughfare which required us to plan our work and install temporary and permanent works to always maintain safe pedestrian and emergency vehicle access to the nearby facilities.
