The brief
With DSD Construction acting as Principal Contractor to Cumberland Council, this scheme involved planing and resurfacing of the B5292 carriageway at Lorton Street, Cockermouth using recycled materials to avoid hazardous waste disposal of tar bound material.
Our scope of work on this scheme included:
-
Planing out 100-200mm of existing carriageway.
-
Excavation of the carriageway by an additional 250mm in some areas and reinstatement with 250mm of type 1 aggregate.
-
Recycling tar bound planings using Foambase technology.
-
Laying of 100mm recycled material with 50mm of binder and 50mm HRA surface course.
-
Full reconstruction of the junction to 450mm depth due to inadequate existing asphalt thickness.
-
Civils works including ironwork replacement, channel kerbs and road marking.
Key quantities:
- Foam mix at 100mm: 700 t
- Geogrid installed: 280 m²
- Type 1 stone at 150mm deep: 540 t
Challenges & successes
As the works were carried out in the centre of Cockermouth, careful planning of road closures, traffic management, and site safety was essential to protect both the public and our workforce.
At the Sainsbury’s junction, the carriageway was initially planed to a depth of 100mm, where it was identified that only 110mm of existing asphalt existed, requiring full reconstruction. This area was excavated to a depth of 450mm and rebuilt using 150mm of 6F5 stone, 100mm of Type 1 stone, a geogrid layer, 100mm of AC32 base, 50mm of AC20 binder, and 50mm of HRA surface course.
Due to the significant impact of the junction closure on the public, the team worked over the weekend of 21st and 22nd March to complete the reconstruction and reopen this section of the site as quickly as possible.
Outputs & Benefits
Health & Safety: There were zero reportable incidents or accidents throughout the works.
Managed access: The roads were closed to the public, but access was maintained for residents and emergency services.
