The project was mobilised within 4 weeks and safely delivered in a busy residential street in Workington town centre.

The project scope

The scheme involved the reinstatement of groundworks, construction of a new compound above capped mine workings and restoration of adjacent housing after the sudden collapse of a disused mine beneath occupied residential housing. This required the demolition of the affected housing and grouting of the old mine workings by the Coal Board prior to our scope of work. Due to multidiscipline nature of our business, we were able to self-deliver all aspects of the project including joinery, groundworks, brickwork, and surfacing. Our scope of work included:

• Clearance and excavation of the site
• Construction of a new soakaway drainage system
• Installation of subbase and porous asphalt binder to allow rainwater to drain into the soakaways
• Construction of fencing
• Reinstatement of the council owned adjacent footpath
• Planing out of 40mm damaged road surface and resurfacing of adjacent council owned road
• Scaffolding of adjacent property to carry out repointing the building gable and underpinning of the garage wall
• Construction of a new boundary wall
• Reducing the height of the garage gable and strip and replace garage roof

Key quantities:

  • Subbase and resurfacing: 500 m²
  • Spoil removal: 400 t
  • Timber fencing: 85 m

Challenges & successes

Due to the urgency of the situation, the project was mobilised from initial discussions to site mobilisation within 4 weeks and work was completed within 16 weeks.

The project was located on a residential street in Workington town centre with the potential for residents and children to enter the affected area. To prevent public access, we closed and secured the street at each end under full road closure permit and prioritised the fencing around the construction site as the first activity. We also ensured that the area was locked when not in use by us and monitored the site using a CCTV camera monitoring system.
