The project was delivered on time including the completion of additional scope due to design changes.

The project scope

Acting as subcontractor, DSD Construction carried out civils works on the A590, Cross-a-Moor in south Cumbria. Our scope of work comprised:

• Installation of new kerbing.
• Paving of new footways using various methods such as blister and corduroy paving.
• Resurfacing of existing footways.
• Extensive drainage works due to nearby pond flooding.
• Removal and reinstallation of several bus shelters.
• Access points for residents such as new driveways and footways.
• Communication and coordination with client Traffic Management partners.
• Further civils works as identified by the client as works progressed.

Key quantities:

• Top Soil strip: 200 m
• Hand laid Asphalt: 150 m²
• Drainage: m

Challenges & successes

All work was undertaken during day and night shifts to complete the project as quickly as possible. During the day, we completed work that did not require road closure or that would impact traffic flow. During the night shift, we completed work under full road closure that would impact the road users and traffic flow.

Some of the works required traffic management. To avoid major disruption to the travelling public and commuters, we carried out this work on night shift only.

Due to client requests the design frequently changed, resulting in additional scope which had to be delivered within the original project duration. We rescheduled work and deployed additional plant and labour to deliver the additional work within the required timescale.
