The project scope
With DSD Construction acting as Principal Contractor, this scheme involved all surfacing and civils works at the Sands Centre and Swifts Bank car parks in Carlisle city centre.
Our scope of work on this scheme included:
- Servicing and drainage works on both car parks.
- Deployment of a DSD Construction Engineer to survey the Swifts Bank car park to decide how much material was required and how much of the drainage could be directed to the edges of the car park.
- Communication and coordination with client Traffic Management partners regarding road closures.
- Planing out 400-500t of materials from the original carriageway.
- Re-laying the carriageway and car parks to depths of 50mm and 110mm using various PSVs.
- Replacement of ironwork, gulleys and filter drains.
- Connecting new pipes to the gulleys at the Sands Centre.

Challenges & successes
This scheme involved total road closures in the surrounding area throughout each night shift to allow us to complete the scheme on time without causing disruption to the public.
There was regular coordination meetings held between all contractors on this scheme with discussions on how to manage the project and to develop bad weather contingency plans. This was necessary to avoid any disruption or unexpected delays to works.
Constant communication was maintained with our client, Cumberland Council, to ensure they were kept up to date with the latest progress and any issues. This also provided the client with an opportunity to discuss any further requirements.
