Our flexible approach during adverse weather conditions resulted in completion of the project on time and to budget.

The project scope

Stourton Park and Ride at Leeds is the third Park and Ride scheme to be constructed by Leeds City Council to help reduce congestion and pollution in Leeds City centre. The facility is fully solar powered, has capacity for 1,200 vehicles including 26 electric car charging bays and is served by a fleet of zero-emission electric buses.

As a sub-contractor to BAM Nuttall, our scope involved the widening of the existing trunk road to facilitate the new park and ride facility and surfacing of the access roads and internal parking areas, including:

  • Site boundary and traffic management
  • Site clearance
  • Earthworks
  • Carriageway construction
  • Surfacing
  • New kerbs, footways, and paved areas

Key quantities:

  • Road surface removed: 16,000 t
  • Distance: 37,000 m²

Challenges & successes

All work was carried out at night under restricted hours working to reduce city centre traffic congestion and the project was constructed during winter and spring with adverse weather conditions which meant we had to be flexible with our surfacing schedule.

Some areas of resurfacing were carried out under a low bridge with restricted head height, meaning that we had to use walking floor wagons to supply materials to the road construction.

The project was completed on time and budget.
