DSD Construction in the Community Update

Introduction

At DSD Construction, we believe in building stronger communities. That’s why our social value programme, DSD Construction in the Community, reiterates our objectives and demonstrates commitment to our community.

Launched three years ago, the programme is focused on giving back to the communities in which we live and work. Whether it’s supporting local schools, assisting organisations helping vulnerable individuals get back on their feet, or helping charities in need of construction support – we are committed to supporting our communities wherever we work.

Supporting the next generation with school visits

One of the most impactful aspects of DSD Construction in the Community is our school support initiative, led by our dedicated Social Value Manager, Chris Lumsdon. One example of this is our ongoing relationship with Richard Rose Morton Academy in Carlisle, where we organise regular sessions that combine physical activity and wellbeing education.

Each school visit starts with fun, inclusive sports sessions such as football, dodgeball, and rounders – designed to encourage teamwork, confidence, and physical health. Following these activities, Chris leads classroom workshops focusing on mental health awareness. These discussions help students understand the importance of mental wellbeing, how to cope with stress and anxiety, manage exam pressures, and develop methods to build motivation and resilience.

Donations to our local foodbank

Regular foodbank donations are another key part of the DSD Construction in the Community programme. We understand that many families and individuals face financial pressures and food insecurity, and we are committed to helping where we can.

From year-round donations of essential items to special seasonal initiatives, including our recent Easter egg donation to Carlisle Foodbank, we continue to support local foodbanks to give a helping hand to families and individuals in need.

Helping ex-offenders

We support local initiatives to help ex-offenders reintegrate into society. Through donations of pressure washers, garden tools, and other essential equipment to the Carlisle Community Payback scheme, we have helped individuals on community service programmes gain practical skills and contribute positively to society.

These donations not only support rehabilitation efforts but also help build self-worth and practical experience, giving people the opportunity to turn their lives around.

Construction projects

As a construction company, we’re also proud to offer practical, hands-on help to organisations in need of construction assistance. This has included working with a sheltered housing organisation for older people, to assist with the installation of a new disability access ramp, providing residents with safer, easier, and more independent access to and from the building – particularly those using wheelchairs, walking aids, or with limited mobility.

This support helps ensure that local community support organisations can maintain safe, accessible, and functional spaces, enabling them to continue delivering valuable services.

Looking ahead

We are proud of what DSD Construction in the Community has achieved so far, but there is much more to come. With more school visits planned, new charity partnerships on the horizon, and ongoing support for those in need, our commitment to our communities will continue.
