The Project

Completion of civil, mechanical and electrical construction works to enable decommissioning of the Pile Fuel Storage Silo at the Sellafield nuclear site, Cumbria. This work was carried out under a framework contract for our client, Doosan Babcock in the high security area of the Sellafield site. Our multi discipline team of project engineers and trades people completed this work in the highly congested, high hazard and regulated Pile Fuel Storage Silo area of the Sellafield site, which included:

  • Installation of new PVC doors in the main nuclear waste storage facility
  • Waterproofing repair to the existing 60 year old nuclear waste storage facility
  • Installation of new fire doors
  • Supply an installation of a new steel walkway and access steps to the existing structure
  • Full refurbishment of the operational plant control room including painting, flooring and secondary fix finishing
  • Assistance with the installation of a new camera system to the nuclear waste silo – including decommissioning of existing systems
  • Installation of a new drainage system around nuclear waste storage silo building perimeter

Our experienced logistics and stakeholder team ensured all labour, plant and materials were available when required

Client Benefits:

All work was completed in a flexible manner and delivered on time with zero defects, zero non conformances and zero accidents – allowing the client decommissioning programme to progress to schedule.

Challenges and Successes

The work was carried out in one of the high security and radiologically controlled areas of the Sellafield site – with additional contraints due to access, logistics and effective working time. To ensure all labour, plant and materials were delivered to the workface at the correct time, our stakeholder and logistics team planned all work ahead of schedule and coordinated with client operations departments and other contractors to ensure the work was started on time and delivered to schedule.

Additionally, our flexible workforce pool of over 50 staff at Sellafield allowed us to assign labour as required to this work and reassign to other projects where delays were encountered.
