DSD Construction, a leading Cumbrian construction company specialising in highways and associated civils infrastructure, is pleased to announce ongoing local prosperity from this year’s regional growth and diversification.
Accelerated business growth
A simple and clear mission has underpinned the Company’s growth: to deliver safe, sustainable high-quality projects and services.
A 40% increase in turnover in 2023 has stemmed from core activities through new contract wins and existing contract renewals, alongside a diversified expansion of its offer. The civil engineering business has seen a particularly significant uplift.
That has been matched to continuing further investment across the business with new infrastructure, additional plant and resources representing a spend of over £5 million pounds during the last three years.
Investing in people
Employing over 165 local people and contributing around 70% of the annual turnover to the local economy and supply chain, organic development has created a positive culture where retention of staff remains high and has underpinned DSD Construction’s status as an Investor in People. Over the last year, 40 new employees have been recruited, including 6 apprentices, with all staff supported on individual training and development plans.
The Directors recognised that the use of digital technologies to change the business model and provide new revenue and value-producing opportunities was integral to their growth strategy. They have been successful in streamlining many administrative processes, drastically reducing the time and costs spent on basic tasks, leaving space to focus on growing the business.
DSD Construction’s digital systems have been scaled easily to accommodate growth and changes in business needs. In addition, reducing the use of paper and physical storage has not only saved money, but is also more environmentally friendly. As a result, it has lowered the carbon footprint associated with printing, mailing, and physical storage.
Diversification and sustainability
DSD Construction supports a diversity of key sectors including highways, aviation, rail and nuclear. Continuous development of products and services within these sectors has also supported this consistently successful and growing company.
Operations Director, Martin Tweddle, said:
“We participated in the National Highways in-situ recycling and graphene infusion project on the A1 in Northumberland in conjunction with Stabilised Pavement Ltd. (SPL) and the University of Manchester – this will not only extend the life of the pavement, but also reduce the need for virgin aggregates and reduced transport and hydrocarbon consumption.”
Managing Director, Shaun Nugent, said:
“Our constant drive to deliver sustainable solutions for our clients has also provided stability for the business through the development of a diversity of products and services. Sustainable construction products, including modular trench box systems and solar/wind powered off grid lighting, are now part of our growing portfolio.”
